The grounds were clearly suffering from the effects of heat and drought, but this was no reason to leave them untended. Note the ceanothus which has been killed by incorrect pruning; ceanothus doesn't sprout from old wood and shouldn't be pruned back hard. We need gardeners who know about plants.
